Background

Wasai is a branding studio based out of San Francisco, California. They are the creator of many popular & free online websites & tools, such as Word Counter, Chinese New Year, GPA Calculator, HTML Color Codes & more. While these websites receive high levels of traffic, Wasai was looking for a way to better manage their content.

Overview

Wasai had approached us with a primary goal in mind — rebuild their existing static websites in Webflow with a 1:1 match in order to better manage their content that gets updated on a regular basis. Prior to migrating to Webflow, Wasai had to manually add their updated content & while this offers a high level of flexibility, it is a tedious & time consuming process. In order to appropriately scale, they knew they had to choose a platform that allowed for custom development & a powerful CMS.

The Foundation

Rebuilding their websites in Webflow meant that we had to rebuild every element, style & script from the ground up in a way that best worked within the platform. The elegant design & attention to detail for each website comes as no surprise — their Head of Product, Alex Dixon, is a trained architect from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The bar had been set high, but we knew that we had the skillset to create the 1:1 match.

Content Management

While building each website, we had to make numerous decisions regarding what content should be managed dynamically & what should not. We had no prior structure to work with aside from their current website’s content, which we then had to determine how the CMS should be built. As it turns out, nearly all of their content is now managed via the CMS.

Programming

Many of the websites, including Word Counter, GPA Calculator & HTML Color Codes, required a large amount of scripting in order to provide their functionality. After receiving the script files for each project, we ensured that they were optimized in a way that best fit their new platform without running unused, error-prone code.

Search Engine Optimization

Trying to keep a high-ranking website, well, high-ranking, is no easy task, especially when migrating to a new platform. During the early & late stages of development, we took careful consideration of the technical SEO that was built into each website & migrated over everything as best as possible. By doing this, we were able to get a true 1:1 match while keeping as much SEO juice as possible.

Wrap-Up

All-in-all, the website migrations turned out to be a huge success. At face value, you would never even know the websites were migrated to a different platform. However, the real difference is what’s under the hood — unlike before, Wasai now has a collection of dynamic websites & apps that are powered by the Webflow CMS.
